Toddlers Outsmart Chimps in Some Tasks, Not All

Primate studies at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutinary Anthropology indicate that our ability to socialize is a key component of our ability to use language. Researchers found that children and chimps and orangutans performed at the same level on a number of tasks. When the task required directing the activity of another, however, children performed at a much higher level. Humans are characterized as ‘ultra-social’.
