To begin with, we will look at taxonomies and how they structure our worlds. Here is an article by Carol Kaesuk Yoon from the New York Times website (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/11/science/11naming.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=reviving%20lost%20art&st=cse)
accessed on 8/24/09. The article is Reviving the Lost Art of Naming. Yoon argues that we are losing the art of naming things found in nature. But our relationship with the world has changed over time. We are no less likely to name things (and categorize things) than we were in the past. Now, it is not important for the urban citizen to know the names of plants and animals. What do we name now and what does this tell us about our environment? Here’s one hint: From OPI OPI Nail Lacquer (http://www.opi.com/ accessed on 8/24/09) we see Nail Color > South Beach Collection a nail lacquer named Suzi and the Lifeguard. What kind of community is OPI trying to create with their South Beach Collection?
