Aesthetic Theme
By lnickles | October 3, 2008
Here are ideas on the aesthetic theme of the building that were shared at the visioning meeting.
Global Theme – From mountains to world community
Adult play ground; big swings – climbing things
Pactice classrooms
Lab school
Appalachian or mountain theme
Environmental theme – group prefers this one
o The natural world
o Waterfall – central focus
o Gathering places where – no clear perceptual boundaries between inside & outside
o Designed outdoor classrooms
o Pedestrian trail – green space
Capture mountain theme in line with historical perspectives of the area, while considering the future.
Appalachian theme: incorporate sense of place culture specific to the area not interfere with early vision or current
•How would one incorporate theme with historical basis and technological vision?
Materials – fits in with landscape
Technology – display history
Also protective of environment we are part of
Energy efficiency – (Solar – build into ridge) “Smart, economical”, yet protective
More focus on culture rather than history
Display photographs
Harmony with region, culture, environment
Cultural Connectedness as defined by:
Celebration of the region
Invitational
Green
Collaboration
Synthesize and Apply
Dynamic/Change
Cultural Competence
Outdoor Education
Invisible High Tech
Walls as Windows into Classrooms, etc.
What do you think?

By houghton | September 12, 2008
Clicking the image on the right will launch Google Earth (assuming you don’t have to install it). That will take you to the same view of the screen shot to the right, where you can then zoom in and around to explore the site possibilities of our new valley home ahead. In the Layers section, put a checkmark in front of Terrain to enable the 3D view.

Concept: Education is Dynamic and Changing
By lnickles | September 11, 2008
Like nature, education is dynamic and changing. How would this reflect in the architectural design of a building? Does this building design do that?

If not, then what? How are others approaching this problem? Know of more web sites like these?

By lnickles | September 11, 2008
As we begin planning the new building, we want your big-picture ideas and concepts.
What is the overall concept? What values do we want to project with the structure and space?
What features of the building would inspire you? What about the building would make you desire to work there?
How should a building designed for educating look?
Note: Replacing our current building is NOT an option!
